What Not to Include on a Resume

Updated: Feb 9, 2023

When you’re writing a resume, it’s important to remember that less is more.

You want to make sure that your resume is well-organized and concise, and that it highlights your best skills and experiences.

JobProfileBuilder.com allows you to create job-specific resumes and enables you to show/show details from your profile.

However, there are certain details you’ll want to avoid including on your resume. Here’s a look at what not to include on a resume.

  1. Personal Information: When writing your resume, you don’t need to include personal information such as your age, race, religion, or marital status. Additionally, you don’t need to include your full address. A city and state are fine, but there’s no need to include your street address.

  2. Hobbies and Interests: Unless your hobbies and interests directly relate to the job you’re applying for, it’s best to leave them off your resume. For example, if you’re applying for a job in graphic design and you’re an avid photographer, then it’s worth mentioning. But if you’re applying for a job in customer service, then it’s not necessary to include your photography hobby.

  3. Irrelevant Work Experience: You should focus on including relevant work experience on your resume. If you have experience that’s not directly related to the job you’re applying for, then it’s best to leave it off your resume. You don’t want to overwhelm potential employers with unrelated information.

  4. Incorrect Grammar and Spelling: It’s important that your resume is free of any errors. Employers will be looking for someone who pays attention to detail and can express themselves effectively. Make sure to proofread your resume and have a friend or family member read it over as well.

  5. References: On your resume, you don’t need to include references. You can simply state that “references are available upon request.” You can provide the references to the employer when they ask for them.

When writing your resume, you want to make sure that it’s concise and well-organized. Avoid including unnecessary personal information, irrelevant work experience, incorrect grammar and spelling, and references. By leaving off these details, you’ll make sure your resume is professional and focused on your best skills and experiences.
